The Waldorf Hilton in London's Aldwych - Review

The Waldorf Hilton in London's Aldwych - Review

In Aldwych lies the Waldorf the concept of Edward George Saunders, who in the late 1800's was the manager of the small Coronet Theatre at Notting Hill Gate. Saunders dreamt of opening a theatre in the crescent shaped area being developed as Aldwych. He shared that dream with a friend of his an accountant named Thomas Frederick Wild. They joined forces and both claimed to have had the idea of adding a hotel to their theatre building plans.

Saunders dreams of a theatre were put on hold when two theatres on each side of his site were built. The construction of the hotel though wrought with financial troubles and changing ownership eventually progressed and in 1908 the Waldorf was opened. Marshall Mackenzie who became the new owner of the hotel, during its building phase, had the design elements emulate many hotels he had seen in the United States. The most noted of those elements was a higher ratio of bathrooms to bedrooms than was usual in the Britain. The Edwardian design won Mackenzie lots of praise and contracts on other buildings in London.

There is marked confusion as to how the Waldorf got its name. Some say Astor money was involved (William Waldorf Astor, had just become a naturalized British subject, and was the richest man in the world) some say the name was chosen because it sounded wealthy.

The hotel today enjoys one of London's most enviable locations as it bridges the West End and the Square Mile, providing an excellent base for accessing the main financial district in the day and the popular cultural hub of Covent Garden and Theatreland in the evening.

It has changed ownership several times in its nearly 100 year old life. Today it stands proudly under the Hilton Brand and is known as the Waldorf Hilton. In 2005 Hilton completed a £35 million (over $60 million USD) refurbishment of the hotel. They introduced a new design concept across the hotel to achieve a look that is distinctly elegant yet avant-garde. Its 300 bedrooms and 6 suites have been refurbished into two exclusive bedroom themes. 'Contemporary' and 'Design', both created by RPW Design. All rooms feature Ligne Roset beds, pique linen, power showers, plasma screen televisions and high-speed Internet access.

The 'Contemporary' rooms are characterized by vast illuminated artbox headboards, which were specially commissioned and created by Peter Millard, and original Waldorf case goods that have been restored.

The 'Design' concept rooms are a stunning minimalist environment. The objective was to maximize the use of space by providing glass interiors between bedroom and bathroom, mirrored doors, and glass case goods.

Each room features a modern interpretation of the traditional valet stand made of polished aluminum, timber, stainless steel and retractable brass breastplate.
Climate-controlled air conditioning
Rechargeable in-room laptop safe
Tea and coffee making facilities
Trouser press
Ironing board, iron, and hairdryer all hidden behind a full-length mirror
Bathrobe & slippers
Freestanding luggage rack
Bedside tables with a pivoting drawer and Occasional table on wheels for convenience and flexibility,
Comfortable day bed in deluxe rooms for additional seating upholstered in leather and fabric to complement the color scheme of the room
Ergonomically designed executive desk and chair
Full blackout at the windows with sheer decorative curtains and sliding draw panels in contrasting textures.

All rooms provide a great sleep experience. Super comfortable specially designed beds and mattresses combined with piquet white cotton duvets and a choice of feather or anti-allergic Oxford Square pillows are provided. French furniture makers, Ligne Roset, developed the bed exclusively. Working with well-known design partnership of Pagnon & Pelhaitre, Ligne Rose has created a slim and curvaceous bed that appears to float above the floor. The bed frame, which is available in natural aluminum and a selection of wood veneers, is held aloft by a combination of feet and rollers that are inset and hidden from its edge. The exclusive bed is further enhanced by its queen-size 17 inch Sealy 'Crown Royal' mattress, using a revolutionary Dual Spring system, which provides firmness while micro adjusting to the guest's body shape. The beds have mohair bed throws, which co-ordinate with the color scheme and contrasting scatter cushions.

The 'Design' bathrooms feature Bespoke wash stand with ceramic sit-on basin with polished stone top and glass and polished chrome base. The 'Concept' bathrooms feature original freestanding Edwardian chrome and marble washstand. All bathrooms have shower rooms with either Thunder shower heads, or Hansgrohe shower towers incorporating shower and body massage jets. Anti steam mirror and Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries.

The former billiard room of the hotel has been transformed into a luxurious, comfortable space for executive customers to relax. The Executive Lounge offers private check in and check out services. The Lounge also serves as a quiet working area for guests it is equipped with WiFi wireless technology enabling laptop use anywhere in the room. A 42-inch plasma screen television is tuned into a news channel throughout the day and a selection of books, national and international newspapers are available. Executive room guests can help themselves to complimentary all day dining including Continental breakfast, afternoon tea, drinks and canapes in the evening.

The Homage Grand Salon is located in the original 1908 Grill Room and its Grade 2 listed features are characteristic of the Louis XVI style. The Salon has 95 seats with a feature bar and walk-in wine cabinet. Homage Grand Salon offers a selection of European dishes, and is under the care of Head Chef Gerry Rae (formerly of Banquette and Mju). Diners on a Friday and Saturday evening can also enjoy live jazz music from a pianist and double bass.

The Homage Bar's new design returns it back to its original proportions. Three areas provide a choice of intimate spaces for people wishing to eat and drink on their own or in small groups. Wall coverings feature contemporary fabrics, and detailed metal panels provide a contrasting backdrop to period pieces set alongside the B&B Italia Vol-au-Vent chair and a rich, smoked oak timber floor.

The original restored Waring & Gillow paneling in Homage Patisserie provides a stunning backdrop for the perfect retreat from which to escape the hustle & bustle of city life. The features have been restored to their original condition offering a rich and sumptuous setting in which to enjoy morning coffee and afternoon tea. Amongst the rich fabrics and period furniture the focal point is a 'jewel box' counter displaying fine pastries by day and serving champagne cocktails by night.

The three existing meeting rooms with period features have also been refurbished with an additional meeting room and syndicate room added. Additionally, the legendary Palm Court and Adelphi Ballroom have been fully restored to their former glory, as befitting their English heritage status.

The Waldorf Hilton is a classic Venue with a very modern flair. Beautifully restored, it is a sophisticated place to stay in the city offering all the modern amenities one could wish for intertwined with touches and flairs of Edwardian London.

Curtains at the Ahmanson Theatre - Review

Curtains at the Ahmanson Theatre - Review

Is it Curtains for the Ahmansons' new production of Curtains?

Curtains a musical comedy murder mystery is a play within a play. The curtain comes up at the Colonial Theatre in Boston in the 1950's with the opening night of 'Robbin' Hood'. An out-of-town try out for a new musical set to go to Broadway. What follows is as they say 'murder, mystery and mayhem'. The leading lady dies mysteriously, the play bombs and the cast is sequestered as the local police detective tries to solve the murder and save the play.

Curtains is the last collaborative work of song writing team John Kander and Fred Ebb. For nearly two decades it has been in development with Kander and Ebb working on it first with Peter Stone who wrote the original concept and book and then with Rupert Holmes. Both Stone and Ebb passed away during the development of Curtains. Leaving the further development of the musical to Kander and Holmes. After enjoying two staged readings in New York the script was given to the Center Theatre Groups new Artistic Director Michael Ritchie by its director Scott Ellis.

Cast of Curtains

Cast of Curtains

That was five years, a lot of rewriting and polishing to the book and music, ago. Then when Ritchie took on his new role of Artistic Director, Ellis called Ritchie again, this time to discuss producing Curtains. Ritchie left a slot in the 2005/06 season blank with the hopes that Curtains would be ready to fill the slot and it was.

David Hyde Pierce and Debra Monk

Beautifully directed by Scott Ellis Curtains is a musical whodunit. Which left me guessing and not able to figure out who the killer was until the mystery was solved by Frank Cioffi (David Hyde Pierce), homicide detective and musical theatre aficionado. Pierce best known as Niles Crane on Frasier is a multi talented performer who is no stranger to the stage, having been seen last on Broadway in Spamalot.

David Hyde Pierce and Edward Hibbert

David Hyde Pierce and Edward Hibbert

Along the way we are hurled into the chaos of life in a backstage musical where we met the flamboyant British director Christopher Belling (Edward Hibbert). Hibbert is also from Frasier fame and is one of those instantly recognizable performers who you just can't recall their name, so let me say it again, Edward Hibbert. You may also recognize him from this seasons production of The Drowsy Chaperone.

David Hyde Pierce and John Bolton

David Hyde Pierce and John Bolton

Then of course we have the once married song writing team of Aaron Fox (Jason Danieley) and Georgia Hendricks (Karen Ziemba) who use this writing gig as an opportunity to battle out both their relationship and creative demons.

Jason Danieley and Jill Paice

Jason Danieley and Jill Paice

The married Broadway producers Carmen Bernstein (Debra Monk), also seen on Frasier, and Oscar Shapiro (Michael McCormick), who are seemingly only interested in the bottom line, not loosing their shirt on this production. Carmen's' zany daughter Bambi Bernstein (Megan Sikora) and the pretty ingenue Nikki Harris (Jill Paice). The love intrest Bobby Pepper (Noah Racey) and the critic Daryl Grady (John Bolton).

Noah Racey and Karen Ziemba

Noah Racey and Karen Ziemba

Curtains has a lot going for it - The lighting design by Peter Kaczorowski and sets by Anna Louizos are bold, fun and entertaining just by themselves. The costumes by William Ivey Long are varied and beautiful. The choreography by Rob Ashford is both zippy and bawdy, at times bordering on R-rated. Some of my favorite moments in the show have nothing to do with plot or music. Instead they happened during dance numbers when I'd be caught off guard and do the 'double take' stare as I'd giggle and give my partner "an I can't believe they did that gaze".

Cast of Robbin' Hood in Curtains

Cast of Robbin' Hood in Curtains

Here is where I am going to contradict myself. I found Curtains to be slick and even though it had flow, it was disjointed. It was entertaining and it left me cold and uncaring. The music was good, but there was no showstopper or song that just stuck in my head. The plot idea is fun and exciting, but when I watched it, I just didn't care. The quality of the production, directing, choreography, costumes, sets and talent is great, top notch, A-list. But nothing happened to me, I wasn't moved, I did laugh and giggle at certain gags, but that's all.

Debra Monk and Cast

Debra Monk and Cast

I didn't leave the theatre excited, happier or turned on because I'd just had this great experience. I left it in the same state I went in. I know I'm not the only one who felt disconnected from this experience and yet there were plenty of people around me who were obviously enjoying themselves. It's exciting to have new works being developed here in L.A. and then moved to the 'Great White Way'. I predict Curtains will make it to Broadway and people will enjoy it. But without some more work, this one won't be a Kander and Ebb classic, and the curtain will fall on a short-lived life.

Dr. Jaqueline Gray - A Mobile Vet - Who Saves Lives

Dr. Jaqueline Gray - A Mobile Vet - Who Saves Lives

Dr. Jaqueline Gray is a veterinarian who has been practicing in the Los Angeles area. She’s made L.A. her home since originally coming to the area for a surgery and medicine internship after veterinary school.

Hello Dr. Gray thanks for coming to visit me

Hello Dr. Gray thanks for coming to visit me

Dr. Gray formed a practice with a partner and they had a successful surgery and medicine clinic. When the time came to part ways with her partner she sold her share of the business and made an agreement to not go into “location” competition with her partner by opening another clinic within – miles of their original surgery. This left her with a unique problem, in that she had loyal patients under her care that still needed her and yet she couldn’t open a brick and mortar practice. So she began to go to them and ended up being one of the very few mobile vets in L.A.

Bruno watching Dr. Gray get her supplies

Bruno watching Dr. Gray get her supplies

The positive response she received from the pets and their owners has been so tremendous that she decided to not open a “store front” and instead to render a very unique and old fashioned service whose time has definitely come again - the doctor who makes house calls.

Checking out the hips

Checking out the hips

Benefits of having a mobile vet is that the four legged patient is able to stay in the comfort of their own home. They don’t have to go through what could be the trauma of a automobile ride. Nor do they have to be over stimulated by being kept in a waiting room full of other sick pets. Instead they get to stay home in their familiar surroundings. Equating to less stress and more comfort and ease to a confused pet who already doesn’t feel well.

Dr. Gray practices both traditional western medicine and also alternative medicine such as chiropractic, acupuncture and homeopathy. She has the wisdom and knowledge to be able to have blend both forms of medicine, using them separately or in conjunction with each other depending on what she feels will be of most benefit to her patient.

Looking over prescriptions

Looking over prescriptions

In our case she proved very capable, actually more than capable (what would that word be) to come into a very difficult situation. We had a very sick dog who appeared to be dying. It seemed to be just a matter of time, perhaps days that he had left. Our regular vet had given us a few options. One was doing more tests which he felt in our case would really be futile but wanted to offer them in case it helped us feel better. To give another cortisone shot (an anti-inflammatory medication which helps with pain) which our dog Brun had been on for several months. We could then take Bruno home and let nature take her course. Our vet of course joined us in the hope that the shot would help Bruno to feel better and buy us some more time with him. The last option was if we felt that Bruno was doing poorly enough he could give him a shot and euthanize him.

Standing still to get acupuncture

Standing still to get acupuncture

We weren’t ready to make any drastic choices and felt that Bruno wasn’t in enough pain or discomfort that it would be the most humane thing to do to give him “the shot”. So we agreed that we wanted to give him a chance to get better if he could. We asked the vet to give him the cortisone shot and then took him home for some TLC and hope.

We have been believers in alternative medicine and wanted to see if it would help Bruno. While we were in his office we asked our vet his thoughts on alternative medicines and he was of the opinion that though there wasn’t any thing wrong with trying them out he hadn’t seen them really work. So when we got Bruno home we began a search via the internet for vets who practiced alternative healing.

Inserting needles

Inserting needles

To our delight we found Dr. Gray and not only did she practice regular medicine and alternative therapies but she was also a mobile vet. This was such a relief to us because Brunos last trip to our vet was really rough. He had been in such pain that he wouldn’t sit and would stand until he was exhausted and could hardly keep himself up. On the way to the vet the motion of the car made him stumble and he fell on the floor and was stuck in between the seats. I had to crawl into the back seat help him back up and actually hold him upright. Because of the amount of energy and the difficulty on him we weren’t looking forward to taking him to another vet appointment.

Getting the Chi energy flowing

Getting the Chi energy flowing

We called Dr. Gray and to her credit she was compassionate enough for a pet that was suffering and confident enough in her abilities to come into a situation where a dog might die and it might be too late for her or anyone to do anything about it.

Along with her assistant Candace, Dr. Gray drove up to Bruno’s house. This turned out to be one of the first blessings she brought with her. The others were her gentle kindness and tremendous healing capabilities.

Bruno had been in great pain from his hips and his lower back. He walked around like a drunken sailor, leaning to the left and seemed to not be in complete control of his body. Stumbling and sometimes falling for no reason. He would be standing and it looked as if he wanted to move, was thinking about moving but just couldn’t convince his body to obey his head. He’d do things like back himself into a corner and stand there like he didn’t know where he was. Sometimes it seemed he get into a tight spot and couldn’t back up or turn around because of the pain. He’d run into his water dish and not be able to maneuver past it so he would just stop and stand there until someone would move it for him. He would lean his head against a corner in his dog house or on a wall and just stand there dazzed. He wouldn’t sit down even though he was dead tired and had to be either coaxed or sometimes helped to eventually lie down.

Un-retouched photo of Dr. Gray working her magic

Un-retouched photo of Dr. Gray working her magic

Dr. Gray came and she took some blood to see if we could find out what was going on with him. She did some chiropractic work on him which he reported was just like getting a good rub. And some acupuncture which he says he didn’t mind the needles couldn’t really feel them but he wasn’t so crazy about not being able to walk around so they wouldn’t fall out. Although he really didn’t feel like walking around it was just the idea of it all. Oh and he really didn’t like getting the blood work taken he so could have done without that!

So far Dr. Gray has come to see Bruno twice. For several days after the first visit we noticed him perking up more and more. He was getting up out of his dog house to take himself on walks. He was moving without falling and his walking was straightening out. He climbed the porch stairs trying to get into the house to get away from the sound of the gardener and his weed blower. He went down the porch stairs without falling. He even trotted a couple of times on his walks. These improvements were very exciting and gave us great hope.

The healing begins

The healing begins

On Dr. Gray's second visit he was feeling so much better than when she started but the healing seemed to have slowed down a little. She came and gave him a B12 shot and some more chiropractic and acupuncture. This time Bruno visibly perked up while the needles were still in him. He had more energy immediately and began to move as if the pain was much less. For that and the next day he got up easier and moved much better. He no longer seems so dazed and confused. He is moving around very well he gets up to say hi to people as they come into the yard. He can turn around easily and his ears are up and tail he has been wagging his tail. As I sat here writing this I looked out the window and he got up and took himself out for a walk. I can’t say how happy we are to have him doing so well. We truly thought we would be burying him and know it appears we are going to have to be chasing after him.

Oh those healing hands

Oh those healing hands

Bruno is still having Dr. Gray come out and see him and we will be giving updates as he continues to feel better and become his old self.

UPDATE –

Bruno has now had Dr. Gray visit him 4 times. After the third visit he seemed to decline. There were a few days where he barely ate and wouldn’t get up to visit with us and it seemed to take a vast amount of energy to even blink his eyes. We began to prepare to have him leave us. We spoke to Dr. Gray who said that he was at a critical point and because he had just had an acupuncture treatment, if she were to come up that day and give him another course of acupuncture without waiting at least three days he could go two ways. It could help him feel better or because of his condition, (his depleted Chi) it could have the opposite effect and help him peacefully pass on.

We decided to wait out the three days and give him a chance to improve, if that was possible. We spent a lot of time sitting beside him, giving him love, hoping and waiting. To our delight he was able to hang on and even improve before Dr. Gray’s next visit. Then Dr. Gray came out again and gave him another treatment. This one seemed to have the magic in it. Since that treatment Bruno has made a complete turn around. I haven’t seen him feel this good for months. He isn’t just walking around he is trotting. He no longer leans to the left, stumbling around like a drunken sailor. He desires companionship and comes around begging for treats. He is vocal and happy and if you were to ask him I am sure he would tell you he feels like his old self again. The consensus of those who love him is that Dr. Gray saved his life.

Question of the day: Who could resist a night of pleasure hosted by a Marquis?

The evening was an intimate gathering actor, musicians, and other sensual beings

The evening was an intimate gathering actor, musicians, and other sensual beings

Answer: I actually can’t answer that question because I don’t know. What I do know is that person is not me. When I heard about “Aural Pleasures” I was....lets see….perfect word search....uuhhmm….interested? Yes, but that doesn’t quite say it. So, lets try curious, intrigued, and oh ho, here’s a good one…titillated. Yes, there’s a good word titillated, feel how that rolls of the tongue, tit-il-la-ted, mmmhhmmm.

Pleasure is what this titillating event was all about and the location host of the event, Coco De Mer is all about pleasure. Coco De Mer named after a seed which resembles part of the female body, is an erotic store that has crossed the pond from London and found a home here in the states in Los Angeles on Melrose Ave.

Marquis Michael Des Barres

The Marquis Michael Des Barres is a former British hard rock singer and front man of the 19790’s Los Angeles band Detective. He is also an actor, notably playing ‘rock stars’ on TV and in the movies. The evening festivities were held in honor of his Birthday.

Anouska de Georgiou

The stage had a lone chair and microphones on it. The evening started with the invitees arriving, mingling with each other, sipping champagne nibbling mini cupcakes and exploring the treasures offered at Coco’s. They eventually made there way out to the back courtyard which was set up with chairs for the evenings reading.

Rome Apple Shadanloo

Rome Apple Shadanloo

The Marquis began the evening with reading a classical piece of erotic literature from an anonymous 18th century writer. He was followed by actress Rome Apple Shadanloo reading from Anais Nin. Other readers included actress/singer, Anouska de Georgiou who read part of a short story by the Marquis De Sade. And actress/singer/songwriter Lisa Zane toped the evening off reading from Fanny Eramont read first in French and then again in English. All the literature choices were classical pieces read with style and sensuality.

The evening was an intimate gathering actor, musicians, and other sensual beings most of whom were friends of the Marquis, and friends of Coco De Mer. Things were finished off with a rosing rendition of “Happy Birthday” sung to the Marquis and generous portions of a birthday cake as delicious as the “aural pleasures” which had just been offered.

Infinity Teeth Whitening System Review - Dr. Forouzanpour Whitens Teeth In 7 Minutes

Infinity Teeth Whitening System Review - Dr. Forouzanpour Whitens Teeth In 7 Minutes

Infinity Teeth Whitening System

Infinity Teeth Whitening System

The Infinity Teeth Whitening System uses cutting edge LED technology with an exclusive formulated whitening gel for dramatic results fast. The specially formulated whitening gel contains a proprietary catalyst which is activated with LED lights. The Teeth Whitening process is accelerated and optimized resulting in a beautiful smile.

Just introduced into the market, the cutting edge teeth whitening treatment, utilizes ultraviolet light rather than laser, to obtain faster whiter teeth. The first Southern California doctor to own this new and advanced teeth-whitening machine, Dr. Forouzanpour a board certified Cosmetic Surgeon chose to offer teeth bleaching after seeing so many patients who felt insecure about their smiles.

Dr. Fourzanpour

Dr. Fourzanpour

My publisher and I went to Dr. Forouzanpour’s offices located in Beverly Hills. His lobby was filled with beautiful people and the PR contact who was there to met us had a dazzling bright white smile, a trophy from the Infinity Teeth Whitening System.

We were ushered to a treatment room and waited while the Dr. finished with a consultation. He came into the room wheeling a small cart with a compact machine on it, the Infinity Teeth Whitening System.

Before and after treatment

Before and after treatment

One at a time we brushed our teeth with the special toothpaste and brush supplied to us. We put on a protective lip balm and then Dr. Forouzanpour put the whitening gel on the mouthgaurd of the LED light and placed it in our mouths. He turned on the machine and our mouths glowed a pretty purple color. I went second and found the hardest part of the experience was not being able to talk as the conversation titillated around me. The Dr. was knowledgeable and charming and it was a little like a cross between a party and an “ask the expert” TV segment while we got the benefit of a beautiful white smile.

The effect my publisher got from the whitening was really great. Just like the PR contact his smile really flashed white and bright. My results weren’t as dramatic yet you can see a difference. Added benefits with the Infinity Teeth Whitening System which is called 7 minute teeth whitening, is you see immediate results which get better as the day goes on. You don’t have to avoid coffee, or red wine etc and they even supply you with a supplemental maintenance spray you can carry in your pocket or purse and spray onto your teeth after indulging in a stain maker like red wine, keeping your teeth pearly white.

Infinity Teeeth Whitening System uses LED lights

Infinity Teeeth Whitening System uses LED lights

The teeth bleaching process is painless and can be repeated up to 3 times per visit depending upon the patient’s need and color preference. This is designed because the gel losses potency and instead of leaving it on for the entire time like most other teeth whitening systems. You get the light taken out, you brush your teeth and then get it another dose of whitening, this can be repeated up to 3 times per visit. Whitening durations vary, but typically last for 3 months. A quick 7 minute follow-up visit is all it takes to keep those pearly whites looking beautiful. The cost runs around $150 per 7 minute treatment; a bargain when compared to what traditional laser teeth whitening costs.

Float Review – Floating Your Cares Away In London’s Notting Hill By Paula Jessop

Float Review – Floating Your Cares Away In London’s Notting Hill

Just off a busy street in West London’s Notting Hill lies an unassuming door which opens into the intimate lobby of Float. The décor is subtle, understated, relaxing and inviting. It feels like you could be going into an exercise studio, a health spa, or a chic little beauty spa and you are.

It’s amazing that Float doesn’t have an identity crisis, it has so much to offer. Float is an exercise pilates studio, a beauty spa offering a variety of facials, massages, and mani - pedicures, a health spa with therapies like shiatsu, cranial sacral massage and Reiki. Most of all it is a center designed to regain your health and balance through, just as the name implies, floating. Floating? Yes, in a specially designed floatation tank.

The floatation tanks are designed for single users to be able to stretch out completely and literally float, their bodies completely suspended in Epsom salt water. The floatation tank is a sensory deprivation tank and once it is closed you are in your own world, void of light and sound with only the gentle sensation of floating in a body of water.

Float's Lobby

Float's Lobby

Why would be a good question to ask right about now. Why? Glad you asked! There are a myriad of health benefits which can be derived from a float. Some of the benefits Float lists on their website are relief from:
• Stress
• Muscle pain
• Back pain
• Arthritis
• Rheumatism
• Insomnia
• Migraines
• Jet lag
• Injury recovery
• Breaking addictions
• Alleviating discomfort in the later stages of pregnancy

As well as assisting healing, floating promotes general well-being and self-improvement:
• Epsom salts leave skin feeling super soft
• Promotes accelerated effective learning, e.g. languages
• Perfect environment to listen to self-confidence or weight loss suggestion CDs
• Inspires creativity

Floatation therapy achieves such wide ranging effects by inducing a state of deep relaxation which harnesses the natural recuperative powers of the body to:
• Improve cardiovascular efficiency to stimulate blood flow
• Reduce the heart rate and blood pressure
• Strengthen the immune system
• Reset the body's hormonal and metabolic balances

I am not quite sure how I happened upon Float or rather Float happened upon me. I was researching my trip to London and looking up spas and wham there on my computer screen was Float. I’m familiar with what a floatation tank is having heard about them years ago and ever since having a desire to try one for myself. When Float and I found each other I knew I had to give it a try.

I booked an appointment and eagerly looked forward to my session. I had a feeling that it would be a great way to fight the effects of jet lag and I wanted to fit it “first thing upon arrival” into my schedule. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to and I had to wait a few days. The relaxation benefits I did receive from my floating proved my theory and next time I’ll insist on it being first on my “to do” list.

When I did finally arrive at Float I was greeted at the desk, offered a glass of water and given forms to fill out. I snuggled into a window seat sipped on some refreshing water, gazed out the window and started to relax before I even got into my float room. They have four floatation rooms each designed with a different mural giving the rooms separate personalities. You can choose from the Cherry Blossom room, the Bamboo room, the Butterfly room and the Dream Time room. I was given the butterfly room which I found very fitting since a theme playing out in my life right now is about flying and freedom.

Once in my room the attendant gave me instructions about showering off first and on how to use the tank. She told me what to do if I got nervous, there are light switches and a door latch switch within easy reach. She also said if the idea of closing the tank all the way was too much I could leave the door ajar and I would still get the same benefits because my butterfly room would be dark and quiet. She explained how I could have a choice of music or nature sounds to bring me in and out of the session and how therr would be silence in between the music/sounds.

I showered climbed into the tank played around with the lights, the door and then sank into the warm water cradling my head with my arms behind my neck at the attendant’s suggestion. After a few seconds I decided I was comfortable enough not to need to support my head because the water did a fine job on its own. I pushed the door closed button turned off the light and waited to hear a babbling brook. The brook sound came on and I floated comfortably marveling how I didn’t sink to the bottom. I felt warm and cozy and began to focus on relaxing. I started to think how the tanks looked like science fiction time traveling or time suspension pods.

I imagined myself a Rip-Van-Winkle exiting and being in some far off time frame. Then I tried to quiet my mind so I focused on feeling the sensation of floating. I’d decided this would be a great chance to do some manifestation meditations and went into one. Then I became aware of time and not knowing how much had passed I began to wonder was it a few minutes or was my session almost over and also it was getting hot in here and maybe I was running out of air and I started to feel the first signs of what I think might be claustrophobia. I’ve never felt claustrophobic before and then I became fascinated by that fact. I realized there was a moment that I could choose to panic or be logical and realize this was a fear I’d not had to face before. I don’t like to feel afraid and so I chose to be logical. The water was warm and the area I was in was small, my body was putting of heat as well and so naturally it would get warmer. There had to be air holes or some kind of ventilation system or people would die and the manufacturers certainly couldn’t be selling these tanks to people all over the world.

I decided to sit up and turn on the lights just to check out my theory. This is where I lost all my new found fear because it was really hard to sit up. I just kept bobbing up and down in the tank sliding into the end or a wall and slipping back up into the top of the water. I certainly couldn’t drown in here if I wanted too and I found it would be impossible to sink. It took a concentrated effort to just sit up. I managed to sit up and turn on the light. There was plenty of space for me to sit up fully and not knock my head into the door. I could see the ventilation holes and I wouldn’t let myself open the door because I didn’t want to go any further into the fear which was already leaving me.

I located the fresh water squirt bottle, turned off the lights lay back into the water and started to float. I then squirted down my face, hands and eyes with fresh water so the salty water wouldn’t get in them and sting. I began to meditate again and once more started to feel the air leave the room. This time I decided to breathe through it quickly it was gone. For the rest of the float I was perfectly fine and didn’t have another unpleasant sensation. I found that time seemed to crawl by and it did bother me not to know how long I had been floating or how long I had left to float and realized this said something about control and me. Interesting, panic, control and the ability to keep distracting myself during a meditation.

Hhhhmmm. I still haven’t decided what to make of those and I think I need to do a few more floats to see what else comes up. I didn’t expect a few lessons on what makes me tick to be included with the price of admission. But I love that kind of thing going deep inside and seeing what is lurking or should I say “floating” around.

Ok enough babbling! After what felt like a very long time and a very short time all rolled into one I began to hear a brook babble and then my light came on and I was done.

Signature Facials

Signature Facials

I showered off the salt water and was met by a therapist who took me into a beauty treatment room where I was given a signature facial. This facial is custom or bespoke as they say in England and is designed specifically for you and what your skin needs at the time of the visit.

The people at Float say that after a float is a great time to get facials, massages and therapy treatments because you are relaxed, receptive and your pours are opened up. Basically all of you is able to receive much more than before a float when you are so tied up in stress and etcs. I drifted in and out during the facial and didn't pay as much attention as I normally would. There were still things that stood out in my mind, of note was when the therapist cleaned and gently massaged my feet before starting the facial. Another was when she was rubbing warm honey into my face with a warm rose quartz wand. The energy that was transmitted from the heat and the crystal was delicious and felt truly luxurious and healing to me.

I was left in the beauty room to get dressed and “float” my way out to the lobby. Again I was greeted at the desk with an offer of tea or water and a place to relax before I left Float. I enjoyed my visit to Float loved being suspended in water with no sound and light around. The skin all over my entire body was soft and supple. My face glowed and my attitude shifted from frenetic to tranquil and serene. I’m ready to do it all over again.
